Clutterless Recovery Groups support meetings emphasize overcoming clutter by clutter support meetings, helping each other as clutter buddies. We are not alone. Through support meetings, using a self-help format, we address issues like cluttering, ADD, AD/HD, attention deficit disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and OCD or obsessive compulsive disorder components of cluttering behavior. In Clutterless support meetings, we do not use derogatory terms like, packrat, packrats, messies, slobs, clutterbugs. Clutterless Meeting Kit
Thank you for obtaining this kit. A lot of love and work has gone into creating it. I hope that it will guide you and make it easy for you to start and run Clutterless meetings in your area.
You will find that conducting meetings will aid you in your clutter recovery and in your personal growth. There will be times when you may wonder if you are up to the challenge. You may get discouraged when attendance at meetings is down. Please do not despair. No one of us has all the answers. None of us are experts at anything than our own cluttering. We may have more experience at changing our behavior than some other members, but we do not present ourselves as therapists or psychologists. All we can share is our own experience, strength and hope. Sometimes we will be guided by a Power Greater than ourselves to offer guidance that we didn’t think we had. That is a wonderful and humbling feeling. Be grateful.
The cost of the kit should be reimbursed to the group leader from the donations of the group. We all need to participate in overcoming this behavior. When your group grows enough to have other members start meetings, they should obtain a meeting kit for their group.
May God bless you for taking the effort to help others as well as yourself and guide you to always say and do the right thing. My blessings certainly are with you.
Sincerely, Mike Nelson, Founder
This is an excerpt from the manual, which will guide you through the process.
Churches, libraries, banks, chambers of commerce and hospitals have rooms available. They may charge a nominal rent. ....
Newspapers will place a notice in their Calendar or Community Events section for free. A fax form is included. You can customize it for your area. Make index card sized announcements. Libraries, churches, grocery stores and book stores will usually let you put them up. ....
There is nothing worse than a clutterer going to a meeting and no one being there. If you make this commitment, keep it. Even if you are the only person there at first, stay for an hour, in case there are latecomers. ....
Encourage others to start meetings in different parts of town and help support them. After all, they drove to your meeting when it started! It's best if the first seven meetings are on different days, but whatever works, works.
Unlike 12-Step Programs, we encourage professionals to share their viewpoint with us. Many of our members will already be in therapy, or have hired professional organizers. When you have some continuity, say ten or more members regularly attending meetings for a few weeks, approach professional organizers, psychologists, or therapists who specialize in clutterers or hoarders to speak at a meeting. They can provide some valuable insights. Also, getting group members who seem to have made progress to tell their stories is good for them and the group.
Once a month, you should have a group conscience meeting to cover business issues. The best time to have these is after the meeting, generally on the first or last meeting of the month. Keep it the same day. We don't get into super-organization. We have a group leader and a treasurer and a literature person. ....
At some point, every group needs to appoint new officers. It can be emotionally difficult to let a meeting go, but it is best for the health of the group and that of the leader. Occasionally, a group will not want to let an officer step down. If both the group and the officer are comfortable with this, he can continue for another six-month term.
Once your meetings are established, you may be approached by the media to do a story on the organization. When this happens, call us and we can discuss the proper way to handle it. Media attention can help all of us, but we must make them aware of the anonymous nature of our meetings. They are usually very respectful, as long as they know. Ongoing PSA's, Community Announcements etc. are necessary to keep the word out.
Note: When you make a donation for a kit, you should get reimbursed from the group's donations.
